Obstacle Course Racing is an exciting and rapidly growing multisport discipline that is now firmly part of the World Pentathlon family — and New Zealand is at the forefront of this change. Following a landmark vote by the Federation Internationale de Sports d’Obstacles (FISO) — formerly known as World Obstacle — where 96.2% of members voted in favour of dissolution, UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne) becomes the sole global governing body for Obstacle Sports from 10 August 2026.
In New Zealand, this means that New Zealand Pentathlon Multisport (NZPM) is the recognised National Federation for all obstacle sports, with the NZ Obstacle Sports Association (NZOSA) (the member candidate for NZL) operating within that structure through a dedicated Obstacle Commission.
This unified approach gives New Zealand obstacle athletes a clearer pathway than ever before — from local events and the national series, through to UIPM World Championships and the Olympic stage, with Obstacle confirmed as the fifth discipline of Modern Pentathlon ahead of Los Angeles 2028.
